Open Position — Assistant Director

The mission of The Providence Foundation (TPF) is to create an environment that is conducive to growth and sustained investment, making Providence the premier mid-sized city in the country. TPF achieves its mission by advocating for policies, facilitating with leaders and stakeholders, building consensus in the community and continuously recruiting new voices. TPF champions productive downtown development and activation. Our work represents the interests of downtown business owners, property owners, residents, and nonprofit institutions. In all our efforts, we aim to embrace and reflect the diversity of our community. Established in 1974, TPF is a private sector, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization supported by over 140 of the leading companies and institutions in Rhode Island.

Begun in 2008, the Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy (DPPC) was created as a public-private partnership formed to preserve and revitalize Providence's historic downtown core by transforming it into a lively, cohesive and prosperous economic and cultural center through the development and management of exceptional public spaces. In 2011 TPF brought the DPPC under its fiscal agency and now operates as a project within the larger TPF organization.

The Providence Foundation is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Director (AD) to assume leadership and supporting roles to further the organization’s mission with specific focus of the public space efforts of the DPPC project. The AD will have both internally and externally facing responsibilities, assisting in building a highly functioning, sustainable organization. S/he will report directly to the Executive Director (ED) and serve as leader and supporter on the development and implementation of strategic initiatives, establishing goals, advocacy, managing the function of the organization, and managing existing and new relationships.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist the ED in overseeing and maintaining the organization’s budget, ensuring the financial health of the organization.

  • Assist the ED in management of staff and consultants. Oversee and manage, where required, external consulting relationships, including contracts, deliverables, and expenses.

  • Independently and with the ED establish and develop external relationships critical to the mission of TPF, including business owners, building owners, developers, universities, government officials and arts and culture organizations.

  • Help to develop and execute a short and long-term development strategy to meet financial and budgetary fundraising goals with significant interaction and support of the board members and others. Serve as staff member to this committee.

  • Help to oversee grant applications, including identifying possible funding sources, researching requirements, identifying approach, writing and/or final editing of grant applications, coordinating work of grant writing consultant, tracking grant through funding period, meeting reporting requirements (unique to each grant received).

  • Work with the ED to develop and implement an annual strategic plan. Set goals and measure outcomes for organization.

  • Project management for future capital improvement projects.

  • Assist the ED with current and ongoing initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ distinguished years in a management position in a nonprofit organization, foundation, or government agency and/or comparable combination of work experience and formal education. Explicit supervisory experience strongly preferred.

  • Undergraduate degree required, advanced degree preferred.

  • Track record delivering superior results, commanding respect, and assuming leadership roles.

  • Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities.

  • Proven ability to work with efficiency, flexibility, and good humor.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people – junior and senior, for-profit and nonprofit, and from diverse backgrounds with a demonstrated interest and commitment to diversity and inclusion.

  • Operates with excellence in mind in all matters, with the confidence to defend/debate ideas without ego interfering.

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills are essential.

  • Passionate about TPF mission and impact.

  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in organizational settings.

  • Self-starter, self disciplined, critical thinker.

  • Remain focused in the face of pressure and time and resource limitations.

  • Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritization skills.

  • Experience with budgeting processes.

  • Experience with proposal and grant writing (gained in a nonprofit or academic environment).
