Downtown Providence’s Revitalization: A Walk with Buff Chace & Lucie Searle

15 Westminster Street

October 5th, 4:30-6pm

About this event

Downtown Providence: an expression of the tides of American history. Reflected in granite and glass, the cobble stoned trail that meanders through the heart of downcity tells a story of brisk sea trade, titanic industry, and cultural significance–up until mass suburban exodus in the late 20th century. The husks of earlier, better times have since proven to be ripe for re-envisioning a new urbanity. This tour examines how these spaces fit into the larger American narrative, as well as how Providence's exciting history informs modern vibrancy and revitalization.

The walk will be led by Buff Chace and Lucie Searle, two individuals whose visions have been shaping downtown Providence for the past three decades. Buff is the founder and managing partner of Cornish Associates, a development firm rooted in the new urbanist movement. Cornish has had a hand in many projects downtown, including the Westminster Lofts, the Harkness Building and the Empire building. Lucie has been involved in real estate development for thirty years, and served as the Development and Project Manager for each of AS220’s historic rehabilitation projects.

The tour will wind through downtown, highlighting aspects of revitalization with a focus on Westminster Street. Attendees will get a glimpse of the past, an understanding of the drivers of revitalization and development, and a taste of the opportunities for the future. This tour is offered free-of-charge, but we are asking attendees to register via Eventbrite so that we know how many to expect.
